Basically I'm writing about your tattoo. The choice is yours what you want to get. Don't let mainstream influence that. I can't tell you how many times people come in asking for "Chinese lettering".... yes, they want Kanji, but why? They have no idea what it means, no connection to it, a fad passing by. Now I'm not saying don't get tattoos with meaning behind it, just that you don't have to. Tattoos are art, from an artist. Get something custom, something unique. Your tattoo artist should be able to provide this, if he/she can't, or you don't like there style, go somewhere else, find something you do like.
I know I'm being hypocritical, because I drew mainstream shit all the time. Some of its for practice, others cause I just like the artwork.
Wrapping it up, tattoos are art, and art is anything, you don't need to have a story behind it or some meaning or your heritage mixed in it. If it makes you happy do it, you don't need to explain your tattoo to anyone.
